As a child growing up in church, the story of Moses was one of the first bible stories I remember hearing. In my young mind, the most memorable part of the story was the baby being put in the river to save his life. Now as an adult, I look at the story with different eyes. It shows God’s hand in every step of Moses’ life.
After being found by the Pharaoh’s daughter, he was left in the care of his own mother. This enabled Moses to grow up with the ideas and beliefs of the Jewish people rather than the Egyptians and their worship of false gods. Through these early teachings, Moses developed a love of protecting the less fortunate. This love guided his actions during the years he lived in the house of Pharaoh.
Two examples of this protective instinct are shown by his slaying of the Egyptian Overseer and the helping of Reuel’s daughters when he protected them from shepherds of a neighboring tribe. These events were preparing Moses for the plans God had for his life---the protecting, saving and delivering His people out of Egypt.
While at first reluctant, Moses did accept and follow God’s plan for using him to be the deliverer of His people from bondage. Like Moses, wherever the Providence of God calls us, we should desire and endeavor to be useful. Even if we cannot do everything we should be ready to do everything that we can.
Many members of Central are always open to new ways of helping the less fortunate in our community. God, in his wisdom, often takes ordinary people and leads them to do extraordinary things in His name. Our roll in this is to be open to God’s will for our lives and be ready to follow wherever he leads us.
PRAYER:
Dear Lord, open our minds and our hearts so that we can hear what plan you have for each of us. Let us be willing to follow these plans and do your will rather than our own. Amen.
