Embelish our Awe

Sometimes I listen to a radio program called “StarDate” on NPR.  I’ve never been a big student of astronomy, but every now and then I am amazed when the host talks about what is happening in the universe.  One day, in the car alone, I almost laughed out loud when the narrator said something about a change that “…would only take a few million years.”  (Only??)  And I learn that in the Milky Way Galaxy where we live, there are around 200 billion stars like our sun.  But the Milky Way is only one of over 100 billion galaxies!

So here I am – a speck of life on planet Earth, in this huge solar system, in the Milky Way, in a universe so big I can’t even imagine how big it is.  And God created all of it.  And in verse 4, the Psalmist thinks of God and the universe and says, “What is mankind that You are mindful of them - human beings that you care for them?”  But I realize that not only is God mindful of us, he knows each of us by name.  We are made just one step below the angels.  We are crowned with glory and honor.

The Creator of the universe loves us and wants a relationship with us and cares for us and hears us when we pray.  As the Psalmist said so well, and as Michael W. Smith put the words to music so well,  “O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth!”

PRAYER: O Lord, during this season of Lent, we thank You for giving us life in your wonderful, beautiful creation.  But most of all, thank You for sending Your Son to live with us, and die for us, so that we can be forgiven of our sins and have eternal life with You.  In Jesus’ name we pray.  Amen.
