In choosing this “Love Chapter”, I reflected on my 6th grade class in Mobile, Alabama. My teacher was a wonderful person and made the last year of elementary school seem like a springboard to life itself. She personified my thoughts of the perfect teacher. She not only taught the subjects, but she opened my eyes to life lessons that really helped me face the future with more confidence. One thing I have with me today that she gave all of her students is the gift of I Corinthians 13. She used it as a lesson of great literature with emphasis on symbolism and beautiful writing.
I remember questioning her requirement to copy the lengthy passage into my notebook in its entirety. It was the King James Version, no less. In preparing for my contribution to this Lent Book, I read five different translations, and I do think the KJV is indeed the most beautiful, not as easily understood, but indeed the most poetic. Perhaps that is because I know it by heart. You see, we had to memorize it, too.
Since my time in sixth grade was a while ago, I do not remember all the symbolisms we discussed, but I do hold dear the main theme of “Love” (aka charity in KJV). This chapter refers to love in its fullest meaning; true love to God and man. Without this, whatever gifts we bestow on others are of no account to us, of no esteem in the sight of God. A deep understanding is of no value without a benevolent and charitable heart filled with love to God and mankind.
As we ponder the significance of Lent while we make our way to the cross, let us remember the meaning of Love as displayed by our God and his Son. The gift God bestowed on us was truly an act of the greatest love that is known. God gave his only Son for us so that we may have eternal life.
When I struggle with life’s issues I find that this chapter helps me to look to God with reassured love and trust. I am reminded of the love of God with its beautiful qualities, and I find joy again and again in knowing of His Love. Also, I am thankful for my sixth grade teacher who emphasized this treasure that I greatly cherish.
